Engaging through meaningful occupation.

With dual training (physiological and psychological), Occupational Therapists endeavour to consider a person holistically. Consequently, they can offer a diverse range of therapies to suit the needs of the child, school, or family.

SO, OTs are concerned with function, that is, the things we want and need to do. OTs refer to these functions as meaningful occupations, and commonly work with children on:

  • Gross and fine motor development (including speech and handwriting)
  • Engaging in essential occupations (school, home, and social events)
  • Sensory-informed therapies and environmental adaptations
  • Undesirable behaviours (causing harm to self, others, or property)
  • Activities of daily living (eating, sleeping, toileting, washing, and dressing)
  • Signposting and social prescribing to appropriate services
  • Understanding and accepting individual ways of being in the world
  • Trauma and associated behaviours, including withdrawal and/or aggression

Meaningful occupations are the everyday activities that help children to learn, grow, and gain confidence. These activities look very different from adult “work” for children. Meaningful occupations are the building blocks of development, independence, and well-being. Play is at the heart of a child’s development. It's how children explore, learn new skills, and build relationships. Through play, children develop:

Physical skills

Play strengthens both fine motor skills (like holding small objects) and gross motor skills (like running, jumping, and climbing).

Problem-solving skills

Creative play helps children practice imagination, planning, decision-making, and self-regulation.

Social skills

Games, pretend play, and team activities help children learn to share, cooperate, communicate, and understand others.

Sensory processing skills

Play involving varied textures, sounds, movements, or materials helps children interpret and respond to sensory information.
