Hello! And Welcome, we're so happy you've found us.

You may be here wondering... What on earth even is Occupational Therapy??! And how can it help us? Well, you're not alone! Here's our summary:

  • Occupations are the things that we want, need, or choose to do (everything we do is an occupation). This includes activities of daily living, such as eating, sleeping, washing, dressing, communicating needs, toileting, socializing, playing, learning, and going to school. The list could go on forever. Because it's so holistic in its nature, occupational therapy is notoriously misunderstood and ill-defined.

  • Occupational Therapy seeks to assess and address the fundamental factors impacting occupational performance and engagement in essential childhood occupations, making it the logical first step for any child experiencing a difficulty.

  • Therapists follow a non-linear process that can include information gathering, assessment, therapy planning, intervention, signposting, multi-disciplinary working and discharge planning.

  • In paediatrics occupational therapists deliver targeted interventions disguised as play, because at the end of the day, it's all about engagement!
    • Did you know... that it takes 100's of repetitions to build a new neural pathway, but as few as 20 when learning happens through play?

  • To practice, Occupational Therapists MUST be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), similar to a doctor or a physiotherapist. The HCPC acts as a governing body, and to practice, therapists must demonstrate that they meet professional standards. Occupational therapists should also hold a membership with the Royal College of Occupational Therapy (RCOT), who regulate CPD and offer further guidance on standards for the medical discipline.
