    Frequently asked questions

What is the purpose of a Sensory Profile?

The primary purpose of a sensory profile is to bridge the gap between your internal experience and your external environment. It transforms vague feelings of discomfort or fatigue into objective data, allowing you to move from "surviving" your day to actively managing your energy. By validating your biological needs, it serves as a foundation for informed self-advocacy, helping you explain to employers, partners, or even yourself why certain spaces work for you and others don't.

What are the eight sensory systems assessed?

A sensory profile assesses how your brain processes information from eight distinct systems. Beyond the five familiar senses, it includes three internal systems that are vital for neurodivergent regulation:

Visual: How you respond to light, colours, and movement.

Auditory: Your sensitivity to volume, pitch, and background noise.

Tactile: How you process touch, textures, and physical contact.

Olfactory: Your reaction to smells and chemical scents.

Gustatory: Your preferences for tastes and food textures.

Vestibular: Your sense of balance, spatial orientation, and movement.

Proprioception: Your awareness of body position and "deep pressure" input.

Interoception: Your ability to feel internal signals like hunger, thirst, or heart rate

Is a Sensory Profile right for me?

Deciding to explore your sensory profile as an adult is often a significant step toward self-acceptance and a more regulated life. For many neurodivergent individuals in the UK, a sensory profile is less about finding "deficits" and more about building a healthier lifestyle.

    A Tool for Self-Acceptance

A sensory profile helps you move away from viewing your reactions as "over-sensitive" or "dramatic." Instead, it provides a neuro-affirming framework to understand that your brain processes information intensely and frequently. By mapping out your unique responsiveness to sights, sounds, textures, and internal signals like hunger, you can begin to trust your own lived experience.

What do the results tell me?

A sensory profile acts as a personal map for your nervous system. It identifies which inputs, like noise, light, or touch, energise you and which cause overwhelm or burnout. By pinpointing these "triggers and glimmers," it replaces self-criticism with self-acceptance, giving you the clarity needed to request meaningful adaptations and build a life that truly fits your sensory needs.
